FOCUS: Bath Spa Uni show at Graduate Fashion Week

Woooooooooooooooooooooooahhhhhlot has happened recently.

Well, Graduate Fashion Week (GFW) has come and gone - a total blurr of colour and silhouette and fiyah!

Arriving backstage, manic - but like, the good kind?
Make up to the left, changing rooms to the right. Clothes were flying, cameras were flashing, models were posing and designers were flailing about. Chatter was constant. All students were each assigned a model to dress.

The individuals with the lanyards on seemed to have the situation un-der con-trol (*snaps fingers* at every syllable). The others (myself specifically), well, not so much. Sweaty palms, ya know?, it happens to the best of us...

The anticipation for the show grew exponentially. Third years eagerly awaited amongst the audience for their collections to strut their stuff. Ohh-ing and ahh-ing came largely from student dressers backstage, as the models made the garments come to life in wearing them. One by one, outfits filtered through checks and on to the runway they went!

Jack Capstick opened the show with opulent fleur-de-lis like prints upon business attire meddled in with kinky latex pieces!? It was a definite jaw-dropping kickstarter.

Rachel Comrie is a personal favourite as I closely experienced her collection develop over the months. Her final product involves a play on asymmetry, bold stripey prints and intricate hummingbird embroidery. She was also shortlisted for this year's Tu Scholarship. One of the strongest collections indeed!

I have to also include Alice Honeychurch, as her all black sustainable collection made a CAPITAL statement on the runway, literally. Slogans such as "Our planet is next" were printed across the achitecture inspired outfits. It makes me giddy for my future sustainable collection!

Elizabeth Midwinter's (perhaps she should consider changing her last name to Midspring?) brightly coloured, oversized dresses with flowery prints encompassed a girly-girl who knows what is up. Just imagine the yellow outfit, intensely strutting down the street on a busy, bleak day. The Sun is behind the clouds, her messy bun is sending strays to the wind, her purse is in her left hand, a green smoothie in her right... Gawk worthy.

And finally, Charlotte Weaver closed the show with a ruffling of feathers. The sequence of outfits told the story of coral bleaching in our seas. A very important message to share in a changing world, and what a way to do it! The closing garment (an all white dress with a scuba inspired head piece) was a total show stealer.

And that was that! Then there was more manic backstage (definitely more than upon arrival) as we all had to box up the collections and vacate the area within the hour.

Check out video coverage of the show by Crookes Magazine if you'd like!

I thoroughly enjoyed looking around at other stands afterwards, exploring the variety of talent there was to offer. Edinburgh College of Art, Leeds University and Manchester University stood out for me personally, due to their creativity and versatility, with fresh and organic ideas, like a good piece of veg.

If you go to Graduate Fashion Week every year, have never been, or have only just heard of it, I would encourage creatives of every field to go if you get the chance. It is a very friendly, informative and inspirational experience that will get all of the creative juices flowing (following up on the healthy food and drink theme there).

As a cheeky mention, it's the Bath Spa University show at the Bath Assembly Rooms this coming Wednesday, June 20th! The people whom haven't had a chance to showcase their collections yet will be doing so then (I'm most excited to see Oli Hanania's and Tessa Pritchard's on the catwalk!). Poster is below. Come have a looky to support graduates!

Thank you for taking the time to read and put up with my quirks!

Whatever you do, do you.
Much love,
Cath xx
